If mom falls again, dad may not hear her

Just because a member lives with their spouse does not mean they are protected. Nine times out of ten, the spouse is of similar age, has medical conditions of their own, and would only be so much help in case of emergency.

Tina called in from Texas to talk about her mother and father-in-law. “Mom is 83, she’s a diabetic, and after she fell the last time, dad did not hear her cries for help,” Tina said. “When I asked why he did not hear her, Tina explained, “Dad is hard of hearing, and when he watches television, he wears headphones.” I told her that I understood, and that I believed Life Alert could offer Tina and her husband peace of mind, so they wouldn’t have to worry as much. “Well my husband wasn’t sure mom needed any type of medical alert because if she had a problem, dad would be there,” Tina said. “But when dad puts his headphones on, mom might as well be all alone.”

We talked about Life Alert, how the system works, and what options would be the right fit for Tina’s family. The standard package, which protects members from any type of emergency, including smoke and fire, was what I recommended. But then Tina told me that every so often her father-in-law would go for a drive into town. “Does he take a cell phone with him just in case?” I asked. “No he doesn’t,” Tina said. “Does Life Alert have something that works outside of the house?” I told her the emergency 911 phone was just like having a portable Life Alert for any type of travel. “The portable unit works anywhere a cell phone would across the country, so whether dad is taking a 5 minute trip to the grocery store, or a 5 hour car ride to see family, they are still protected,” I said.

Tina was quiet for a moment, and I knew she was thinking very hard. She then said, “Randy, this sound great, but how much is this all going to cost us, because this is something my husband and I want to purchase for our parents. “Well adding the portable unit to your package will only increase the monthly monitoring fee by $10,” I said. “That would make the monthly monitoring fee only $49.95 a month to protect both parents.”

“That’s great!” Tina exclaimed. “How do we get started?”
